Commentary: The Beginning of the End for Vana'diel?

With the conclusion of VanaFest 2010, an event held in Tokyo to celebrate eight years of Final Fantasy XI, the future of the multi-platform MMORPG pioneer has become much clearer. Since the announcement of Final Fantasy XIV, players have been speculating about the fate of Vana’diel. Details about updates to the fourth expansion pack and a new add-on solidify Final Fantasy XI’s future, at least for another year.

FFXIV Beta Website Opens March 11

It's now official: the first pieces of the Final Fantasy XIV beta test are falling into place, and beta testers, who were sent information on March 1st regarding the beta, will have access to the tester website starting March 11.

The announcement came as part of Final Fantasy XI's VanaFest 2010, held February 28th in Tokyo, Japan. Dubbed the "Secret Bonus Stage!," the announcement appears on the official VanaFest 2010 website along with details on the future of Final Fantasy XI.

FFXIV Beta Test Applications Open

Square Enix has opened a new web site for Final Fantasy XIV beta test applications:

For now the beta only covers the Windows (PC) version of Final Fantasy XIV -- though it appears from the site that there will be a separate beta for PlayStation 3, SE isn't releasing any details. There will also be multiple rounds of beta testing with increasing pools of testers based off the initial applications. The site is split up by region/language:
