FFXIV Beta Test Applications Open
Square Enix has opened a new web site for Final Fantasy XIV beta test applications:
For now the beta only covers the Windows (PC) version of Final Fantasy XIV -- though it appears from the site that there will be a separate beta for PlayStation 3, SE isn't releasing any details. There will also be multiple rounds of beta testing with increasing pools of testers based off the initial applications. The site is split up by region/language:
- Japan/Japanese
- North America/English (NA)
- Europe & Other Regions/English (U.K.)
- Europe & Other Regions/French
- Europe & Other Regions/German
One interesting note is the requirement of a Square Enix ID, which, based on Final Fantasy XI's integration with PlayOnline ("POL"), could point to the eventual phase-out of the PlayOnline platform. Only the Japanese market has used POL as a real multi-game platform -- other than Tetra Player, a card game requiring an additional subscription, the North American market only uses the POL platform for Final Fantasy XI.
With no official release date other than sometime in 2010, it's not clear when the beta will begin. There's also been a lack of updates on the primary Final Fantasy XIV website since the end of 2009, so more details -- or even announcement of the beta period and release date -- could be coming very soon.
